American rapper Megan Thee Stallion has sued her record label, 1501 Entertainment for a termination of her contract. She said on an Instagram Live that she was not clear on the terms of her contract, and that when she was asked for a renegotiation, she was told she wouldn’t be able to release new music.

After she claimed that 1501 Entertainment was blocking her from releasing music, the judge granted a temporary restriction order which allowed her to release new music and banned the label from threatening her on social media. She is suing the label head, Carl Crawford for $1M dollar in damages and demands a termination of her contract, which also stipulates that she receives only 40% of her revenue and the rest goes towards her label. Similar cases have occurred where artists have to fight for rights from their labels. Such is the case of pop artist Taylor Swift, who got the rights to her music taken away without her consent when her label was purchased.

After the district judge in Texas granted Megan a temporary restraining order which expires on March 11th, 2020, she was allowed to drop her awaited EP “Suga”.
